After years of working with fleet buyers across Gauteng, these are the 5 mistakes I see most often — and they cost businesses real money.
1️⃣ Buying on sticker price, not total cost
The cheapest vehicle per unit is rarely the cheapest fleet to run. Look at service costs, parts availability, fuel consumption, and residual value over 3 years.
2️⃣ Not matching the vehicle to the job
A panel van doing city deliveries has completely different needs to one covering 500km routes. The wrong spec costs you in fuel and downtime.
3️⃣ Ignoring driver comfort
Uncomfortable vehicles = tired drivers = accidents and absenteeism. Your drivers are in that cab 8 hours a day.
4️⃣ No planned replacement cycle
Running vehicles past their optimal age costs more in maintenance than a new payment would. Plan your renewal before the wheels fall off — literally.
5️⃣ Dealing with a generalist, not a specialist
Not all vehicle salespeople understand commercial fleet requirements. Work with someone who does this every day.
That’s what I’m here for.
