The Volksiebus Reinvented

Few vehicles carry as much cultural weight in South Africa as the Volkswagen “Volksiebus.” From school runs to game-lodge transfers, safari shuttles to family road trips, the Caravelle nameplate has been a fixture on South African roads for decades. Seven decades after the first generation rolled off the production line at VW’s factory in Kariega, the T7 generation now arrives as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) signaling that the spirit of the original Bus lives on, re-engineered for a cleaner, smarter future.

This distinction matters. The Multivan Caravelle differs fundamentally from the recently launched T7 Transporter range, which is co-developed with Ford and shares its underpinnings with the Ford Tourneo Custom. The Multivan is a premium family MPV built on Volkswagen’s own modular car platform (MQB), the same platform underpinning the VW Golf and Tiguan.

For the first time, there has been a deliberate split in the range: the more luxurious Multivan models migrate to VW’s own MQB platform, while the more work-oriented Transporter variants are built by Ford. The T7 Caravelle is, in every sense, a full-blooded Volkswagen. In South Africa, it takes on the beloved “Caravelle” name, a badge that South Africans have trusted for generations.

For the first time in its South African history, the Caravelle abandons diesel entirely in favour of electrification. The T7 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with two electric motors, front (85 kW) and rear (100 kW) for a combined system output of 180 kW and 350 Nm of torque via a 6-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.

The electric 4Motion AWD system gives full independent control over the rear axle. Once the Caravelle reaches 130 km/h, it automatically decouples the rear axle and shuts off the rear motor to conserve energy.

The 19.7 kWh battery pack delivers a claimed all-electric range of up to 91 km, with 11 kW AC charging and 50 kW DC fast charging (10-80% in ~26 minutes). Most daily commutes and school runs can be completed on electricity alone.

Seven individual seats are mounted on a flexible sliding rail system, with a multifunction table, electric sliding door, and electric tailgate as standard.
